All persons who are arrested and taken into custody are transported to the Jefferson County Jail for booking and incarceration. It is our goal to house you in a safe, secure manner and provide for your basic needs while you're in our custody. All inmates are required to follow the rules and regulations while housed in the facility. The Jefferson County Jail is divided into separate housing areas depending on Classification. Classification is the process that determines the housing location of which you would be assigned. Male and female inmates are housed separately at all times. The Jefferson County Jail houses both pre-trial detainees and post-conviction inmates who are serving sentences or awaiting transport to Kansas Department of Corrections. Our facility also houses inmates from surrounding counties and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Visiting hours are as follows:

*Visitation can be suspended at any time by the Sheriff for any reason.

In Person visits are suspended until further notice, all visits being done through video.

VIDEO VISITATION

Video visits are 25 minutes long to start at the top of the hour and half  past the hour.   Video visits cannot be scheduled during meals or lockdown times.

Those wishing to visit will need to register and be approved.  Visitors can register at www.inmatesales.com or visit the kiosks, located at the Sheriff's Office.  If help is needed, you must call customer service at (866)340-7879.

Remote visits (from outside of the Sheriff's Office) are 7 days a week and cost $.20 (20 cents) a minute.

On site video visits (from Kiosk located at the Sheriff's Office) are everyday except Monday and Friday and are free of charge.

Inmates are allowed 2 of each type of visits per week, scheduled on separate days.   It is the visitor who sets up the visits.   * Visits must be set up 24 hours in advance.

It is the inmate's responsibility to check the kiosk to see the scheduled visits, and be ready for the visits. 

The Sheriff's Office has NO CONTROL over refunds or rescheduling, inmates locked down for disciplinary reasons will not be allowed visits.  

*Be mindful to not ask for visits on scheduled court hearing days.

 

INCOMING MAIL

1.  Only mail received through the U.S. Postal Service will be accepted by the Jefferson County Jail.  No hand delivered letters, notes, or cards will be accepted.

2.  Incoming mail must be address with the full name of the inmate for whom the mail is for, and the full name and address of the return.  mail not addressed in this manner will not bee accepted and will be returned to the sender.

3.  All non-legal/non-privileged incoming mail will be opened and scanned for contraband.  Any incoming mail may be refused for any reason and returned to sender.  Legal mail and correspondence from the courts, licensed attorneys , any agencies of the Federal, State or Local Government will be scanned for contraband and opened in the presence of the inmate it is addressed to.   

4.  Mail and correspondence is prohibited with inmates from another facility.  Any mail received containing correspondence from another inmate will be returned to sender.   Mail and correspondence between Jefferson County inmates is prohibited also.

5.  No mail that contains contraband or poses a threat to the security of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will be accepted.  Contraband includes, but is not limited to mail (letters, cards, postcards) containing glitter, stickers, rope string, illegal substances, mail that appears to have been tampered with or altered in any way, and anything that is found to be a threat to the safety and security of the facility.  This mail will be returned to the sender, or kept as evidence for possible prosecution.

6.  No Stamps or writing material will be accepted in  incoming mail.

7.  Money Orders will be accepted.  NO CASH or PERSONAL CHECKS will be accepted through the mail.

8.  Photographs may be received through the mail.   Photographs will not be accepted if they are obscene, pornographic, or illegal in nature.

Incoming mail will be returned due to the following:

1. Gang related material - Graffiti
2. Obscenity
3. Two party check - CASH - "only money orders accepted"
4. Stamps - Stamped Envelopes
5. Restricted publications - "No Magazines"
6. Unknown Substance or Bio-hazard
7. Unauthorized correspondence from other facilities

Items that may be brought in to inmates are as follows:

6 pair of socks "white"

6 T-shirts "white"

6 boxers or underwear "white"

6 bras "white without under-wire"

 

PUTTING MONEY ON AN INMATES ACCOUNT

Family and Friends may put money on an inmates account either by using the Kiosk in the lobby of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office or by visiting www.JailATM.com   Inmates may receive money orders by mail, and these funds will be placed in the inmates account.  Personal Checks are not accepted and will be returned to the sender.

AXXS TABLETS (By Combined Public Communications)

Money can be put on an inmates Tablet account by visiting www.inmatesales.com or by calling (877-998-5678)   Money applied to the account is non-transferrable.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office cannot add money to accounts, nor are they able to fix any issues or discrepancies with services or transactions.

Minimum Qualifications for Corrections Officer:

• Applicant must be 21 years of age at time of appointment.
• High school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
• Honorable Discharge from Military Service (if applicable).
• United States Citizen.
• Applicants must successfully pass an intense background investigation.
• Applicants will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen.
• Applicants may not have any felony convictions or its equivalent under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Applicants must be of good moral character.
• Average or above average physical condition with weight in proportion to height. No physical or mental condition that hampers performance and causes unnecessary risk to oneself or the community. Able to walk, run, and stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to transverse or climb irregular surfaces.
• Applications must have a full range of motion, be able to operate Sheriff's Office firearms and be able to participate in all aspects of physical training.
• Normal hearing and olfactory functions (sense of smell).
• Eyesight requirement of 20/20 or correctable to 20/20 in both eyes. Full color vision or corrected color vision certified by a physician. Night and peripheral vision required.
• Demonstrate responsibility and stable behavior in their past employments, financial history, personal relationships, and personality.
• Successfully complete the Selection Procedures before eligibility for employment will be granted.
• Applicants must read, write, and speak English fluently, with no dysfunctional reading disorders.
• Applicants who are selected as eligible for employment will be required to undergo a psychological interview to determine fitness for duty.
• Have a Valid Kansas Drivers License.

Each Correctional Officer is responsible for the receiving and intake process of an arrestee. This includes computer book-in, fingerprinting, photographing, searching, change-out, and housing cell block assignment. They electronically control all entrances and exit points to the facility, monitoring all security video surveillance systems, operating the intercom system, observing inmates in housing areas, and deals personally with inmates in the housing areas. Correctional Officers are responsible for answering incoming phone calls, handling radio communications with staff, and entering and maintaining accurate records in the computer.
