The K-9 unit was started in 1993 by Capt. Randy Carreno who deployed a single purpose drug dog. Sgt. Kevin Gibson started with the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office in 1994 and started the first dual purpose drug and patrol K-9. Since this time, the Sheriffs Office has also had dual purpose bomb and patrol K-9s and a bloodhound. Currently Sgt. Gibson and PSD(Police Service Dog) Grazl, routinely visits all of the school districts in Jefferson County to sniff the schools for illegal drugs. Sgt. Gibson and PSD Grazl are certified annually thru the Kansas Highway Patrol. The K-9 unit answers all calls for service as part of the patrol division. The K-9 unit is available to assist all other agencies when a K-9 is needed for both drug detection and patrol type calls.
